SPAIN EMBARASS TAHITI WITH A 10 NIL DEFEAT

0

The Confederations Cup
match up on Thursday
afternoon between Spain
and Haiti went exactly as
we had all anticipated. The
Spanish team was able to
get on the board early
when Fernando Torres
ripped a shot in to the back
of the net in the fifth
minute. From there, the
flood gates opened and the
goals kept on coming. When
it was all said and done,
Spain took down Tahiti,
10-0, in the largest goal
difference in
Confederations Cup history.
It was also the largest goal
differential in a senior FIFA
tournament.
What else should we have
expected from a match up
between the best team in
the world and a team that
has just one professional
player?
Fernando Torres added
two goals later in the match
up to complete his hat trick,
while David Villa was able
to net a hat trick of his
own. Torres and Villa are
the only Spanish players to
ever record three career
hat tricks. Torres added a
fourth goal later in the
match.
Torres became the first
Spanish player to score
four goals in a game since
Raúl in 1999.
You have to feel bad for
Tahiti, who was completely
over matched, but they
have to be happy that they
made it in to the tournament
and scored a goal in their
opening match. No one
expected them to be
competitive with Spain and
the scoreline reflected
exactly why.
Spain will finish up the
group stages on June 23
against Nigeria, before
advancing to the elimination
round of the tournament. <a href=”http://

Ian Duncan registered his
second victory of the
season in the Rift Valley
Motor & Sports Club
(RVMSC) organized KCB
Mobi Bank Rally with a fine
display in Baringo County
on Saturday. His victory
came as a result of
pacesetter Carl “Flash”
Tundo suffering a puncture
on the repeat run of the
16.6 Km Alphega-Hilltop
stage located in the
extensive sisal farm-fields
of Mogotio.
Tundo, who is the KNRC
defending Champion, was
leading the rally by over a
minute from second placed
Duncan going into the latter
stages of the rally but had
to contend with playing
second fiddle. Tundo
settled for second place
with Baldev Chager sealing
off the podium dash.
Fourth was Kisumu based
Jassi Chatthe who also won
Division 2 while Issa
Amwari won Division 3 in a
career best 5th place
driving a Silverspread
sponsored EVO9.
Duncan’s modest march to
the ceremonial finish at
Kampi ya Moto region belied
the excitement and gusto
that was bubbling
underneath, but it exploded
in a solid stream of joy
when he added up to his
initial win in Voi last month.
The demanding and
treacherous terrain in the
Great Rift Valley near the
Equator in Mogotio region
proved quite unforgiving.
The early morning run in
Gicheha and its environs
saw four cars roll out of
the rally.
Going into the last loop, the
energy- sapping drive had
claimed over ten cars.
Other casualties were
Victor Okundi, Jonathan
Somen in the Classic car
Cup, Izhar Mirza with
gearbox problems.
Allistair Cavenagh kissed
the Nakuru tour goodbye in
the early morning at
Gicheha farm when the rear
left drive shaft snapped
and he had no choice but to
retire
Homeboy Fahd Bary caused
quite a steer at the
Kipsyenan Primary
spectator stage when his
EVO9 contraption rolled;
but the Nakuru based
driver and his partner
Sameer Yusuf managed to
push his car back up and
completed his run and
ultimately the full course.
The RVMSC round saw
crews tackle 170km of
competitive driving and
liaison distance of 215km.
A total of 51 cars were
flagged off at KCB Menengai
Crater Branch by Nakuru
County Governor Kinuthia
Mbugua and KCB Board
Director Ngeny Biwott, KCB
Chief Business Officer
Kenya James Agin and KCB
Retail Banking Director
Annastacia Kimtai.
The first section in Gicheha
farm turned out to be a
very slippery drive. This is
where the Mitsubishi Evo 8
driven by Azar Anwar and
Julius Ngigi rolled. This was
Anwar’s first roll in 15
years since the Equator
rally edition of 1998 when
he incidentally won his
maiden KNRC diadem.
“It was actually a slow
corner with a hairpin right
and we were not at high
speed. Our front wheel hit
the inside bank which threw
the car on its roof within
split seconds. It took us a
long time to put back the
car back on its wheels so
we retired,” Azar said.

TRICKS TO INCREASE PERFORMANCE IN YOUR WRX STI

5

1.The Intake
Trick

Getting more air into the
engine’s combustion
chambers produces more
power, right? Right. After a
simple installation, the low-
restriction conical air filter
and straight intake tube of
the
K&N Typhoon kit
(800-858-3333;
http://www.knfilters.com) gave us
a 17-hp increase at the
wheels and a new jolt of
torque worth 21 pound-
feet. The intake carries its
own million-mile warranty
and doesn’t void the
factory warranty. The
downside: It doesn’t meet
California emissions regs,
and the increased intake
noise was hated by the old
folks in our office.
2. The Exhaust
Tactic

We were feeling pretty
smart after installing a
Magnaflow exhaust
(800-824-8664;
http://www.magnaflow.com). All it
took was a few bolts and
clamps, and the WRX was
putting out a pleasant
burble at idle without being
too loud. Power was
unchanged, but torque
increased by 10 pound-
feet. Like the intake, the
stainless-steel exhaust is
guaranteed for life and
won’t void the Subaru
warranty.
3. But They
Don’t Add Up
We put our project car on a
dynamometer with the K&N
Typhoon intake and the
Magnaflow exhaust (the
numbers mentioned earlier
were achieved with each
performance piece installed
solo on the WRX). With both
installed, horsepower was
up by 11 over stock and
torque was up 20 pound-
feet—increases that are
less than those produced
by the modified intake
alone. The extra airflow on
both ends was apparently
too much for the factory
ECU to cope with, and it
compensated by cutting
power right when the turbo
reached maximum boost.
Either the intake or
exhaust works fine alone,
but ECU modifications are
required to get them to
work in tandem.
4. Let’s Get
Serious

So, to get even more
power, we had the engine
reprogrammed. Remember,
that voids your powertrain
warranty. We called
Cobb
Tuning (801-713-0035;
http://www.cobbtuning.com) for its
AccessPort, which can
completely revise the
engine software. And to
further free up the
exhaust, we threw in a
Cobb downpipe with a
high-flow catalytic
converter. The AccessPort
connects to the OBD II plug
and automatically saves the
factory engine
programming. It also has
preset engine maps for
various states of tune, but
none that accounts for an
aftermarket intake. Cobb
says there are too many
variables to have a single
program, so we got a $460
custom engine tune. After
that, wheel horsepower
was up 57 to 266, torque
increased a staggering 68
pound-feet to 293, and now
the engine sounds meaner
than Sasquatch’s wife.
-Getting a
Grip
We installed a set of
higher-performance
Bridgestone Potenza
RE-11
(www.bridgestonetire.com)
tires, swapping out the
stock Dunlop SP Sport 01s.
Skidpad grip increased from
0.84 g to 0.87 g, with a
noticeable reduction in the
understeer that plagues
the stock WRX.
On The Dyno: Stock vs.
Tuned
The dyno tests, done at
Speed Industry in Troy,
Michigan
(
http://www.speedindustry.biz),
report horsepower and
torque measured at the
wheels. Correcting for
driveline losses, a
conservative estimate is
that crank horsepower has
been increased by 65, over
the stock figure of 265, for
a total of 330. The power
boost shows up most
noticeably at higher
speeds. Our souped-up
WRX was 0.3 second
quicker to 60, at 4.4
seconds, and 0.4 second
swifter through the
quarter-mile, at 13.1. But
the advantage at 100 mph
is 1.3 seconds, and the gap
gets wider all the way to
the 142-mph top speed. So
for less than $4000, high-
speed acceleration has
improved enough to shame
any stock WRX STI.

NEYMAR IS PRESENTED TO FC BARCELONA’S FANS AT CAMP NOU

10

Neymar has put the
finishing touches to his
switch to Barcelona by
signing a five-year
contract at the Nou Camp
this evening, the Spanish
club have confirmed.

The 21-year-old Brazil
striker flew to
Barcelona
this morning to finalise his
departure from Santos,
nine days after a
preliminary agreement
between the clubs was
made public and just hours
after he played in a 2-2
friendly draw with England
at the Maracana Stadium.

In a journey charted in
detail by the Catalan giants’
official website, Neymar
was greeted at Barcelona
airport – having arrived
slightly behind schedule –
before being taken to the
club’s offices to pose for
photographs in the
Blaugrana shirt and to
undergo a medical.
The forward passed
“exhaustive tests” before
committing his future to the
club until June 2018 in the
presence of president
Sandro Rosell, vice-
president Josep Maria
Bartomeu and sporting
director Andoni Zubizarreta.
The transfer fee remained
undisclosed.
Neymar was later paraded
on the Nou Camp pitch in
front of thousands of Barca
fans and hundreds
journalists, who were
scheduled to meet the
player at an evening press
conference.
The signing of Neymar
further boosts the Primera
Division champions’
attacking riches and the
prospect of him linking up
with four-time reigning
world player of the year
Lionel Messi is a
mouthwatering one.
It remains to be seen just
how Barca coach Tito
Vilanova will utilise the two
forwards in the same side,
but midfielder Andres
Iniesta is confident the
South American duo will
have no problems playing
alongside each other.
“The great players always
understand one another.
Leo will make Neymar better
and vice-versa. It’s a team
game and the sum of all
helps the club win,” said
the Spain international, who
believes Neymar has made
the right decision in
choosing Barca.
“He’s coming to the best
place that he could go to.
One of the best young
players is coming and that’s
what we all wants,” Iniesta
added.
“He will contribute a lot,
he’s a player with
outstanding talent and
quality. He can unsettle
opponents, score goals and
give spectacular
performances at a club
which is ideal to continue
growing.
“It’s great news that we
can count on him.
Surrounded by the people
that he’s going to have
here, he will get better all
the time.”
