CARL FLASH TUNDO WINS THE GURU NANAK SAFARI RALLY 2012 AND THE K.N.R.C TITLE 2012

Tapio Kaukannnen who led
in the opening 33km stage
prior to his exit in the
preceding 57km CS2 stage.
Tundo admitted that
consistency was the to the
great effort.
This was Tundo’s sixth win
of the season and his first
outing with his sister Tash
Di Cangio — who becomes
the first ever woman in
nearly three decades to win
a round of the KNRC after
Sylvia King navigated Ann
Taith to victory in the 1984
Guru Nanak edition.
Champion Carl Tundo ended
this year’s Kenya National
Rally Championship season
on a high note after winning
a third career KCB Guru
Nanak Rally title in Suswa
And asked about what it
feels like to win six out of
eight events in a season
Tundo said: “Its such a
fantastic feeling, I mean,
pretty good record. Today
(sunday) has been a bit
of luck, but were always
out there to win. The fact
that we’ve won it with my
Sis is quite amazing.”
Tundo had his campaign
effectively sewn up when
Tapio, Alastair Cavenagh
and Ian Duncan retired.
Chager, who has failed to
beat the high-flying EVO9s,
admitted it was time to
upgrade into a new
contraption next season if
he is to regain the form
that won him the KNRC in
2008.
He is said to be shopping
around for a Mitsubishi
EVOX. Other casualties
were Alex Horsey, Minesh
Rathod who rolled just
before the finish of CS1,
Daren Miranda and Asad
Anwar whose suspension
bolt dropped out.
Joel Muchiri and Riyaz Ismail
also kissed the event
goodbye about two
kilometres from CS2 start of
Rifle Range stage.
The 2WD class
was, perhaps, the most
stunning of them all as it
registered two finishers in
the Thethy siblings Charan
and Dalbir.Charan won the
2WD class in a time of
2:38.49, eclipsing his
younger brother Dalbir by a
3.43 margin as Dalbir’s
nephew, Gurmit Thethy,
failed to master the terrain.
“I retired after breaking
the rear axle on the VW
Golf just 3 kilometers to the
finish of the 57kms CS2,”
said Gurmit. Carl Tundo and
his sister Tash Di Cangio
Don Smith and Bob Kaugi
were crowned the 2012
Champions after playing a
waiting game. They took
advantage of Mavir Baryan
and Izhar Mirza’s exit.“We were taking it easy as we
new our Division Two
opponents would attack,”
said Kaugi.
became the first ever
brother and sister to win a
round of the Kenya National
Rally championship.
Their win was a good
consolation for their father
and veteran Frank Tundo
who retired with mechanical
problems.Tundo junior
swapped navigators with
Frank and had the 2012
KNRC navigator champion
Tim Jessop call pace notes
for his dad.The 2012
Classic Car Cup Champion
Aslam Khan won the
category with his younger
brother Arshad.
History was made as Thethy
siblings Charan and Dalbir
become the only finishers in
the 2WD category.
